Part 2 (Press, Television, radio, Internet).
Co-ordinator: Jim Clarke: An Introduction to Media Studies
From ubiquitous advertising to the ever-present internet, we now live in a media-saturated world. This course will introduce students to the idea of studying rather than merely consuming the plethora of media that surrounds us.
The course will examine and analyse different forms of media, introducing students to the notion of approaching all media from a critical perspective.
There will be an especial focus on understanding the rhetoric of media, and considering how it might be analysed semiotically. The course will also consider how the media depicts and represents others, and what assumptions it makes about its audience. Students will learn to take a critical perspective to the notion of news, considering how news is generated, packaged, presented and re-presented.
Finally, students will examine the interactivity of the internet and whether it genuinely offers new modes of discourse.
Please note that the format of most courses will change from time to time. Some courses may not be available to students in a particular year.
